WASHINGTON – The Birmingham community will be one step closer to its goal of opening the largest urban park in America after U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) presents the Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area Commission with nearly $1 million in federal funding at a check presentation ceremony Friday.
Sessions will present $980,000 to Steve Jones, Chairman of the Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area Commission, to help the Commission acquire and develop more than 1,100 acres of land atop Red Mountain for the park. Sessions secured the federal funding in the Fiscal Year 2008 Omnibus Appropriations bill that Congress passed in December.
After joining Jones and Wendy Jackson, Executive Director of the Freshwater Land Trust, for a guided tour of the site, Sessions will present the funding to park commissioners, community leaders, and park supporters at 2:30 p.m. at a public event at Oxmoor Valley Golf Course.
