Wil’s Fashion 101 Guide

It has become apparent to me and all of the “style” community that someone needs to intervene on behalf of better taste. This is W. N. Walker’s “Do’s and Don’t” Fashion and lifestyle commentary for 2013.

DONT’s

Tights: Contrary to popular culture, they are OUT! The teacher says “Stop it!”

Neon Colors: Less is more. Yes, thick can mean cute in African American culture, but it is absolutely NOT cute when you’re carrying wide loads! Some things don’t need to be enhanced.

Sneaker Wedges: This is the ultimate in hood and completely the worst interpretation of a high heel.   Ladies, stop being lazy and get a real heel

Sagging: MEN. Stop. It!!! In jail parlance, when you sag, it’s a sign that the “door” is open. This has become a disgusting trend and needs to be stopped, and not just by the fashion police. Sagging will never get you a job or even a hamburger if your pants are down in the wrong situations.

Fake Handbags: Ladies, I know we’re in a recessions, but please, just say NO to the fakery. It’s better to have to one quality bag than 15 tragic ones. In the end, you pay the same price anyway. So why not just pay up front and get it done?

Brown vs. Black: Contrary to what general opinion or even what your mama says, these foundational colors are NOT meant to be mixed. It’s a travesty to wear brown shoes and a black bag or belt, or any such variation.

Now, let’s get onto the real business. (And it’s always best to be positive, right?)

DO’s

Wrist Watch: Everyone — men, women, children and babies — needs an amazing classy watch to complete any outfit.

Smart Phone: It simply is unattractive to have a phone that has no internet or text capability. We live in a technology age. Without proper communications you are doomed to stay behind the times and exempt from today’s prosperity.

Clothing Essentials: In every closet should hang at least one amazing black suite, one expensive pair of black dress shoes/pumps, two crisp designer white shirts, one camel belt and matching shoes (remember, no mixing black and brown), and a nice overnight duffle bag for traveling.

Winning Colors: If you have questionable fashion judgment, you’re always safe wearing these colors: gray, tan, cream, black and, yes, white.

As always there are exceptions to every rule but these never change. But if they do, I’ll know first, so keep up with me!
