Dr. Mia Cowan is on a mission to bring quality healthcare and customer service to people who want a “beautiful” life that is more than skin deep.
She believes that beauty radiates from a body that’s nutritionally balanced and medically sound. And that happens only with a plan of healthy eating and lifestyle choices, and routine medical care. Fortunately, this is where her practice, MiBella, (Italian for “my beautiful”) Gynecology and Wellness Center, comes in.
“Our mission is to provide superior and compassionate gynecology services to adolescents and women of all ages with emphasis on prevention and lifelong wellness,” Dr. Cowan says. “I not only provide traditional gynecological services, but also holistic medicine to promote overall health and wellness.”
In addition to offering traditional gynecology, MiBella services also include medically-supervised, non-surgical weight loss for men and women, nutritional supplements and minimally-invasive surgeries.
The Birmingham native graduated in 2002 from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where she became the chief medical resident, the first African American to gain that honor. She completed her training in obstetrics and gynecology in 2006.
With a master’s degree in both business administration and health education and promotion on top of her medical degree, Dr. Cowan runs an office on U.S. Hwy. 280 where she offers one-on-one patient counseling in a comfortable space in a way that values each woman’s time.
She is especially passionate about serving adolescents and young women. “If I can catch young girls early, I can educate them and help prevent sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies and cervical cancer,” though she recommends pap smears (which detect cervical cancer) should begin at age 21.
Another of Dr. Cowan’s personal and professional goals is to do her part to decrease health disparities among people of native African ancestry, starting here in Birmingham and ultimately, in the world.
