Actor Bill Duke Screens "Dark Girls" Documentary at the Carver Theatre this Saturday
Silver screen and television actor, producer, writer and director Bill Duke will be in Birmingham this weekend to promote his new documentary “Dark Girls.” Produced along with filmmaker D. Channsin Berry, the documentary explores the often debilitating attacks on dark-skinned women's beauty and self-esteem. The 9-minute preview provides haunting insight into the struggles these women face in society at large.

Birmingham Public Library Hosts Exhibit on Civil Rights Icon Arthur Shores' Scrapbook.
The Birmingham Historical Society and the Birmingham Public Library are showcasing the life and times of Birmingham civil rights attorney Arthur Shores in a special exhibit. The exhibit features scrapbook pages of newspaper articles and printed materials, which Shores collected throughout his legal and political career. This exhibit is part of the library's ongoing programs designed to recognize Birmingham's role in the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement, which the city will highlight in 2013.
I interviewed the Shore's daughters, Helen and Barbara, on the history of their father and his importance to the Movement shortly before their first book signing of "The Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill." I took a few pictures of my own pictures from their father's scrapbook.
