"Justice For Trayvon" Rally Set for Tomorrow
A consortium of local groups is organizing another rally in Birmingham as one of many national demonstrations this weekend.
Civil rights organizations and citizens concerned about the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Black teen Trayvon Martin are organizing a rally Saturday, July 20, in Birmingham. The rally, like others that have sprung up across the nation in protest to the decision, are calling on the U.S. Jusice Department to continue investigating George Zimmerman's point-blank shooting of Martin on Feb. 26, 2012 and holding him criminally accountable for killing the unarmed teen.
The rally starts at noon in front of the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue in Kelly Ingram Park downtown, across from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. The event is one among many taking place across the country on Saturday in conjunction with the National Action Network (NAN), headed by Al Sharpton, who is scheduled to address rallying crowds nationwide via satellite.
For more information, contact Sheila Tyson, president of NAN's Birmingham chapter, (205) 249-8559
From the Blog -- Walking While Black: Guidelines for Survival in Trayvon Martin's America
Lawyer, investor and entrepreneur Donald V. Watkins shared his thoughts and fears about the impact of the George Zimmerman verdict that is roiling Black America.
On his Facebook page, the former Birmingham city attorney shared the ugly legal history of oppressive judicial rulings that have hampered African Americans' progress. He also wrote a letter reminiscent of "The Talk" his parents had with him about how to behave, and survive, during the Jim Crow era in the South.
Since Zimmerman's acquital on all charges last Saturday, more Black parents are expressing a sad need to have "The Talk" with their children, particularly their sons. Like his parents before him, Watkins offers guidelines to help his children and grandchildren survive in a society that views them as "suspicious" and opens them to stereotypical fears and attacks that can cost them their lives.
He allowed us to reprint his postings on our blog.
