Who: South Regions Minority Business Council
What: SRMBC’s 22nd Annual Conference and Expo – Business Connections 2005: “Creating Pathways to Business Opportunities.” Business Connections 2005 brings together corporate executives and buyers, governmental agencies, business resource organizations and MBEs in an environment not easily achieved elsewhere. It creates networking opportunities for Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) owners to form business relationships with other MBEs and corporations.

The expo will be open with over 50 booths with representatives from such corporate partners as BellSouth, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Alabama Power, Southern Progress, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, N.A., the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Wachovia Bank.

The event opens with a networking reception at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Alabama Gov. Bob Riley is the scheduled keynote luncheon speaker.

Business Connections is open to:
 Minority businesses interested in doing business with Corporate America
 Corporations interested in building relationships with minority businesses
 Corporate purchasing agents and diversity coordinators
 Persons interested in growing their businesses and learning more about economic empowerment.

Who: Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
What: Southern Roots: Celebrating Diversity in Visual Arts. The Institute, along with the Academy of Fine Arts presents its 16th annual art showcase. This exhibition features works by artists who are either Alabama natives, have family or other ties to Alabama. The works include paintings, ceramic pieces, furniture and more. The show is displayed through June 26 in the Institute’s Odessa Woolfolk and David Vann art galleries.

Who: Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
What: Angel Bofill, live! The R&B singer will be performing for the BCRI’s “Free the Spirit” concert in honor of its 10th Annual Juneteenth Celebration. Bofill debuted on the music scene in 1978 with a 3½ octave range voice and a critically acclaimed self-titled album. Bofill left the biz for a few years to start a family while living on a farm and growing organic vegetables. Today she’s back and better than ever.

Who: Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
What: Juneteenth Celebration. BCRI’s Tenth Annual Juneteenth Festival kicks off with a Friday night concert featuring Angela Bofill at the Alys Stephens Center. The event continues Saturday with the day-long street festival featuring music, fun for kids, food and free admission to the Institute. On Sunday, the city will gather for a special worship service at the historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

Who: Birmingham Civil Rights Institute
What: Sixteenth & Sixth Summer Nightlife Series. Every second Thursday – from June through September – the Institute will be transformed into a New York-style café featuring spoken word performances, acoustic music on the patio, dancing, mingling and samplings of various wines, beer and cheeses. June’s event will feature a jazz piano performance by Kenneth Davis, BCRI Curator of Exhibitions.

What: Fourth Annual Ujima Math and Science Fun Day, a one-of-a-kind experience for young people and their parents. Local professionals come together to expose inner-city youth to the exciting world of math and science in a fun-filled day of high-energy, hands-on activities, all aimed at sparking children’s desire to learn more about these “difficult” subjects.
