Our new media partners in this annual guide now include W.N. Walker PR and First Impressions Marketing, which also publishes What's Happening Birmingham.

This year, the Magic City Classic Ambassador is none other than hip-hop impresario, actor, director and producer, Ice Cube. And for the second time in its history, the game has generated more than $1 million in scholarships for the bowls' schools, Alabama A&M and Alabama State University, according to event director Faye Oates of Bruno Event Team.

The Magic of the Magic City Classic

I'm a sports ignoramus. It's my blind spot, a subject for which I have little interest, a very scary attitude for someone in the media business to have. So when I came to Birmingham two decades ago, the Magic City Classic held, well, no magic for me.

I couldn't understand why people thronged the streets in downtown Birmingham for the parade, talked breathlessly about what they would wear to the stadium, plan which parties they would attend, and mention something or other about their loyalty to one of the two rivals in the annual game between the Bulldogs of Alabama State University and the Hornets of Alabama A&M.

And it's aa good thing they did, because some of the honorees died this year, but not before smelling the roses in thanks to their contribution to the cause.

The Metro Birmngham NAACP kicked off its yearlong celebration in January with the unveiling of a commemorative calendar, "When We Walk: Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement In Birmingham.

Cooper Green Forum Next Tuesday Calls on County to Create A Healthcare Authority Immediately

After four previous community forums, a consensus has formed around creating a healthcare authority based on a model from Denver. That city and region faced similar challenges to Jefferson County and created a system that delivers quality healthcare to all, regardless of ability to pay.

The fifth forum is set for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 29, at the Vestavia Hills Library, 1221 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia, Alabama 35216.

The panel will include Jefferson County Commissioner George Bowman, who has advocated a healthcare authority before fellow commissioners voted to end hospital related services at Cooper Green on Dec. 31, 2012.

Bowman will present a proposal for the healthcare authority model based on the forums' findings to the full County Commission.
